UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

Worried About Woodworm? Let's Get to the Root of It.

Have you spotted small holes in wooden beams, floorboards, furniture or other timber around your property? You could be looking at signs of woodworm.

Woodworm is the common name for the wood-boring larvae of certain beetles, which can tunnel through timber and cause damage over time. However, those little holes don't always mean you have an active infestation. They could be evidence of an old problem that has already run its course.

That's why identifying the issue properly matters.

At Powell Pest Control, we take the time to understand what you've found, assess the affected timber and explain your options. Whether you need advice about a small area of timber or a more extensive treatment programme, we'll recommend a practical solution based on the property, the extent of the problem and the condition of the wood.

UNDERSTANDING WOODWORM

What Exactly Is Woodworm?

Despite the name, woodworm isn't actually a worm. It's the common term for the larvae of certain wood-boring beetles that live and feed inside timber.

The larvae tunnel through the wood as they develop. Eventually, adult beetles emerge, leaving behind the small holes people commonly associate with woodworm.

The extent of the damage depends on factors such as the beetle species, how long the infestation has been present, the type and condition of the timber, and whether the infestation is still active.

KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR

Could Your Timber Have Woodworm?

Identifying woodworm early is crucial for protecting your property. Use this checklist to spot the most common signs of an active infestation.

Key signs of possible woodworm:

  • Exit Holes: Fresh, neat round holes in timber (approx. 1-2mm).
  • Bore Dust: Fine, powdery dust (frass) around or beneath holes.
  • Tunnels: Tunnels within the wood, visible if a piece is broken.
  • Weakened Wood: Floorboards or beams that feel soft or crumble.
  • Live Beetles: Adult beetles emerging from wood between May and September.

Note: Old exit holes can remain long after an infestation has run its course. These signs alone do not confirm active woodworm.
